Staffing Using Student Labor- By Dorothy Pannell Martin

Filling part-time positions is often hard and in some cases nearly impossible. The need for part-time employees, particularly in the high schools, is common. Staffing with more hours than needed to fill a position — in order to attract a person — causes much of the overstaffing that exists in schools.

To solve this problem, many school districts are employing students or clubs/classes to fill the need. Below describes what three different school districts have done.

Contract a Club/Class

Collier County Public Schools in Naples, Florida, has two different programs using student labor to increase serving efficiency and save money for the district’s school food-service program.

Fundraising

This all came about because schools were constantly looking for fundraisers — and often these fundraisers became competitive sales for the school’s foodservice program. Sheila Sheridan, Director, and Bill Goulding, Specialist, with Collier County School Food Service program have attacked this problem by setting up a selling area or station at high schools — stocked the area with products for student to sell.

The student, teacher, and parent volunteers operate the station and in turn receive 10% of the gross sales for the club they represent. If they sold $400 worth of products, the club receives $40 — deposited into the club’s account.

Last school year Lely High School one club sold over $100,000. The school may choose to rotate this means of making money for the club among the different clubs. As student leaders have said, “This sure beats the week-end car washes.” A club can sign up to operate the station for a two-week block of time or for a semester.

Janey Thornton, Director of Child Nutrition in Hardin County (KY) Schools, reports excellent experience with work agreements between food services and classes/clubs. The club or class agrees to provide two students the entire lunch period. The same students are to work a minimum of one week at a time.
